I need help in the book TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD?

Well I am reading the book TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD and in the first pageg it says that "All we have is Simon Finch, a fur-trapping apothecary from Cornwall whose piety was exceeded only by his stinginess." I wanna know, what does piety mean in this sentence????
