Why did my car over-steer?

"I do not believe I was traveling at an excessive speed for the conditions". If the car had good tires then obviously you were traveling too fast. What probably happened is that you hit a bump or even just an undulation in the road which made the car get "light" on the wheels which caused it to lose traction. Once a car enters a skid it can be very difficult to regain steering control.
