Nikon D40 or D80?

If you are wanting something that you can stay with for a long time, you probably will want to go with the D40 and spend the price difference on extra lenses. Every 4-5 years, you will need to buy a new DSLR to keep up in the technology because something new is always happening and the lenses can last you 20 years, they will fit all nikons.
