What is wrong with genie opener?

its a screw drive model. the door opens normally but you have to hold the on down to close, also it hits the bottom and goes back up. it worked a couple times then did that. also the remotes try to open but does not work.. we followed the directions.. also we skipped the safety beam part for now, just to get it going. is that required to have the whole thing open and close?
